INTERNATIONAL AWARD IN DESIGN, ENGINEERING AND INNOVATION
2005 - 2006
IN THE FIELD OF AUTOMOTIVE HUMAN FACTORS

OBJECT OF THE COMPETITION
Italdesign-Giugiaro is promoting an International Award in Design, Engineering and Innovation, which will award prizes to three innovative research projects in the field of automotive Human Factors design.

THE EVALUATION CRITERIA IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN FACTORS
The following evaluation criteria shall be privileged:
-technological novelty
-optimisation for human shape
-optimisation for human movement
-optimisation of the thermal environment
-optimisation for comfort and convenience
-perception enhancement cognitive interaction
-use of information-society interfaces
-improvements in active and passive safety
-use of biologically compatible and environmentally sustainable materials
-inclusive design for special populations (children/elderly/disabled)
-implementation potential

PANEL OF JUDGES
The Jury Panel shall be presided over by the Rector of the Politecnico di Torino, or by an academic representing the Rector with voting rights, and by 6 voting members.
The names of all members of the jury panel will be formally announced on the design competition internet website by the end of May 2005.
The decisions of the Jury Panel shall be made by means of simple majority voting.

PRIZES
Three prizes shall be awarded for the Competition:
The value of the First Prize awarded to the winner of the Competition shall be of 25.000,00 Euro.
The value of the Second Prize awarded to the competitor obtaining the second place shall be of 10.000,00 Euro.
The value of the Junior Prize which will be awarded to the best competition entry from an individual of less than 22 years of age shall be of 5.000,00 Euro.
The First Prize may be divided ex aequo between two entries which the Jury might deem to carry equal merit.
In the case that no suitable entries are submitted and the Competition is closed without a winner being selected (or two winners ex aequo),the Jury may, incontestably, split theFirst Prize money even in diverse amounts and distribute to the most outstanding entries deemed to beworthy of special mention.
The Prize monies shall be transferred to the successful competitors within 30 days from the official announcement of the Competition results.
The Prizes do not imply for the Promoter the acquisition of the i.p.r.(intellectual property rights) related to the entry, which shall remain the property of the Competitor or Competitors.

RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE/ELIGIBILITY
The Competition is open to the following on a worldwide basis:
a)individual designers, engineers,individual undergraduates, graduates and researchers working in universities or other state or private research centers or design schools worldwide. Competitors must be less than 35 years of age at the time of the closing date.
b)groups of designers, engineers, individual undergraduates, graduates and researchers holding the joint authorship of a project and possessing the requisites in compliance with item a).
Jury members, their relations, or members of the teaching staff of the Politecnico di Torino together with the Italdesign-Giugiaro S.p.A. Group are debarred from taking part in the Competition. The employees of Design and Engineering Studios, Style Centers and Engineering Divisions of car or automotive manufacturers in general may take part as individuals or as groups providing that all competitors fulfill the eligibility requirements pursuant to Item ORIGINALITY and that the submitted entries are their exclusive property and not part of their company*s assets.

ORIGINALITY
The projects submitted shall be original; project previously submitted to other similar Competitions may not be used.
The content of the project shall neither be already published before the present Competition nor already produced in small, medium or large series. Projects specifically produced by companies for commercial and/or advertising purposes will not be accepted as submissions to the Competition.
In case of controversy concerning the originality of a project, a special Commission shall provide a ruling; the Commission shall include three members from ICSID Board or ICSID associates possessing the appropriate qualifications.

ANONYMITY
a)The data of the Competitor or groups of Competitors shall be submitted using the form attached to the present Notice, also published on the internet www.italdesign.it  www.polito.it  www.icsid.org/italdesign

The form must be signed by the Competitor or by all the members of the group competing to endorse the acceptance of the Notice provisions.
The form shall be placed in a sealed non-transparent envelope which shall bear an 8 digit code number.
The form includes the declaration - which shall be under written by the Competitor or by the group of Competitors 每 stating that the entries submitted have never been published before the present Competition, that the work was produced personally by the above mentioned competitors and that the material has been prepared by, or under the supervision of, the above Competitor/s.

b)No signatures or other distinctive marks are permitted on the actual materials submitted by the contest Competitors.
Each received entry shall be numbered by the Independent Intermediary in order to guarantee receipt ahead of the day that the Jury meets.

GROUNDS FOR EXCLUSION
An entry may be excluded from the Competition.
a) if it is received after the final closing date.
b) if it does not comply with the provisions provided by the Notice and by the related conditions and terms.

FORM OF THE COMPETITION ENTRY
Each project submission must include a detailed description of the design objectives and the design concept. The detailed description may consist of a degree thesis, research work, etc.. The document may contain tables, figures and photographs which are functional to the comprehensive assessment of the project.
In addition, a concise, separate, summary report must also be submitted. The concise summary report should be written in English and be of a maximum of ten pages in A4 format. As with the detailed description, use of tables and illustrations is acceptable if functional to the illustration of the concepts involved(maximum in A3 format).
Finally, all entries must be accompanied by a single summary presentation poster in Microsoft powerpoint format (one page with text, pictures and/or graphics). The poster will be printed by the Politecnico di Torino in a cm 50 x cm 70 format. The summary poster must condense the main ideas and technical methods of the Competition entry in a concise manner and must be an important, unified, communication of the proposed ideas. The format and organization of the poster is not fixed, but it must include at least the following sections:
Title of the Research
Background to the Design Problem
Design Objective(s)
Design Concept
Considerations/Conclusions
Competitor*s 8 digit code
3D physical models in any format are not accepted to the Competition, and Competitors are warned that only the Competitors* 8 digit code number may appear on any of the submitted material. At their discretion, Competitors may also include as part of their submission a CDROM or DVD containing slides, animations or simulations provided that the same are brief, and submitted in a standard video format.

PROTECTION AND INSURANCE
The Promoter shall be responsible for the safety of all duly received entries and to this purpose they shall under write an insurance policy against any damage or loss which might be incurred during handling.
The maximum sum insurable shall not relate to the value of the entries in themselves, but to the execution costs of submission only if the entry can not be easily duplicated by the Competitor.

REPRODUCTION RIGHTS
a)To all intents and purposes the entries shall remain property of the Authors.
b)The payment of the prize money provides the Promoters an option on the project publishing rights (which shall however always be attributed to the Author) for one year starting from the date on which the winners are officially announced. The Promoter shall be authorized to or ganize an Exhibition or use any other means of publication or audiovisual support or the web to divulge the prize-winning entries and any other entries which were not awarded a prize (in this case only with the prior consent of the Authors).
c)The Organizers of the Competition will not be responsible for the projects entering the Competition. If the Competitors deem it necessary, they shall be responsible for protecting their project with an application for copyright or patent before entering the Competition.

DEVELOPMENT OF ENTRIES
a)Italdesign-Giugiaro and the Politecnico di Torino hereby undertake not to modify in any way the entries that are submitted.
b)In the case it should become necessary to present the winning projects in a different form, deemed to be more easily understood or communicated, the Competitors shall be invited 每 without this constituting an obligation 每 to develop the design to the requisite level specified by the Jury.
If the Competitors do not possess either the experience or the resources necessary to develop the project to the requisite level, or if the same were not able to perform the necessary work in a reasonable period of time from the date the results of the Competition are announced, the Promoter 每 who shall also assume the relating costs 每 may nominate a consultant or an or ganization to work together with the Author.

DELIVERY AND CLOSING DATES
The entries shall be delivered to the Politecnico di Torino from Wednesday, February 1st, 2006 to Tuesday, April 18th, 2006 by 5 pm, neither after nor before, to the following address:

In the case the delivery is made by a delivery service (the postal service or a carrier) the dispatch must be definitely sent within the aforementioned date (as attested by the delivery service documents).

The Jury shall convene to examine the entries by the end of May, 2006.

PUBLICATION OF JUDGES* DECISION
Italdesign-Giugiar o S.p.A. and the Politecnico di Torino shall advise all Competitors of the Competition results by the end of June 2006 by way of a registered letter to the winners and a letter sent by priority mail to all other Competitors.

REPORT AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
As soon as the Jury has concluded its evalutation, the Independent Intermediary shall draft a report which shall include the number of Competitors, the names of the Panel of Judges, the names of the winners, the Jury*s assessment of the quality of the submitted entries and the criteria and grounds on which the winning projects were selected.
Italdesign-Giugiaro, the Politecnico di Torino and ICSID, each working in its own field, are committed to presenting the event to the international press in an appropriate manner and to providing due importance to the event by way of media events and other appropriate communication measures.

Excepting the remittance of the Prize money to the winners within the scheduled timeframe, the Promoter reserves the right toarrange, at the most convenient date, an Award Ceremony to which all winners shall be invited.
