ICONIC BATHROOM MANUFACTURER WINS 2014 GOOD DESIGN AWARD® OF THE YEAR

Australian iconic bathroom maker, Caroma, with renowned Industrial Designer Marc Newson has won the 2014 Good Design Award® of the Year for its 22-piece bathroom collection. Dr Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia said judges felt that the Caroma Marc Newson Bathroom Collection exemplified how the process of design thinking can be applied to a longstanding everyday product to resolve challenges and issues and reach a beautifully designed outcome.

This project sets a global benchmark in environmentally sustainable, economic and social design practice and is a truly impressive product from a market leader in recycling and reduction of carbon footprint. The innovation here from a sustainability perspective is that the designers have connected recycling to commercial outcomes and the “net-effect’ is a better, more beautiful and sustainable world.”

DYSON COOL FAN AM06, GOOD DESIGN AWARD® BEST IN CATEGORY FOR DOMESTIC APPLIANCES

Judges’ Comments: “The first Dyson Cool Fan was an incredible innovation and a true breakthrough product. Dyson’s designers and engineers went back to the drawing board and have now taken that to the next level. Shaving 75% off the sound output is sure brilliance and is something that needs to be heard in person. This is incremental innovation with a monumental outcome.”

Judges’ Comments: “This is a clever little piece of technology that works well. Accuracy, functionality and user interface considerations are paramount in a product such as this and the designers have delivered on all fronts. The product works seamlessly across a Bluetooth interface and is very intuitive to use. This technology offers users an important service that will have a positive impact on reducing the number of drink driving incidents on our roads.”

Judges’ Comments: “A great little product that has been carefully designed to offer additional functionality to the everyday clothes peg. The designers took a nifty idea and resolved it beautifully. The material selection, manufacturing process and ergonomics of this product are perfect. It goes to show that good design can still bring joy to everyday products,”

The Minbie has been carefully crafted with intensive research and testing to ensure the end product is the best it can be. The innovation here is really about how the function of this product follows the form. Every tiny detail on this product has been very purposely designed to be in exactly the right place. This is a breakthrough product.”

Fishing is such an Australian pastime and this product has redefined the way in which families can introduce the sport to their children in a safe, functional and fun manner. The practicality of this design is one of its standout features. It has been very elegantly resolved with clever use of materials and manufacturing techniques.”

Judges’ Comments: “Beautifully refined and considered design from every aspect. The designers really understood the target market well and have designed a perfect people mover. The exterior design is stunning and makes this car look less like a people mover and more like a stylish sports utility. From an interior design perspective, the car is uncluttered, offering great visibility and a perfect blend of technology and user centred ergonomics. Clever elements include the removable centre console, fold down trays which are well built and sturdy, adaptable sun visor system and ample interior adjustably and space. This is design intelligence on wheels…”
